The Importance of the Orbital Welding Prep

Written by Morgan Industrial Technology | Sep 3, 2021 5:17:03 PM

One of the most overlooked steps in the orbital welding process is the prep. The quality of the weld is directly dependent on the prep. In order to make a perfect weld, the tube end must be square, smooth, and burr-free. If these criteria are not met, it will create a poor fit-up, and ultimately a bad weld.

To help solve these problems, MIT offers T+C stainless steel tube facing tools. These facing tools quickly remove burrs and other imperfections after the cut. From 1/8" OD tubing to 6" pipe, T+C produces clean, weld-ready preps every time.

The FM-114 Tube Facing Tool is a robust, bench-mounted facing tool that plugs into your site power and will work consistently for you all day long. This tool can be used on stainless steel, carbon steel, titanium, and most nickel-based alloys. It is capable of clamping tube diameters from 1/2" to 4 1/2" while facing maximum wall thicknesses of schedule 40 (4") Stainless Steel.

The FM-63 Tube Facing Tool is a reliable facing machine that produces clean, burr-free tube ends for any application. This machine has a tube diameter clamping and facing capacity of 1/8" to 2 1/2". Operated with an electric motor, the easy speed adjustment allows for controlled material removal.

The FM Micro Facing Tool Is a portable facing tool designed for micro fittings and tube ends in difficult-to-reach places. The tool comes with an optional 12" long flexible shaft that allows in-place welding. The micro collet options fit small tube sizes of 1/4", 3/8" and 1/2".

No matter if you are hand welding or orbital welding, proper facing plays an important role in the weld results.
