The tungsten electrode might be one the smallest parts of the orbital welding process, but it's also one of the most important. It's crucial to ensure that the tungsten electrode is properly installed. Check out our step-by-step guide below on how you can change and properly install the tungsten on your AMI 8-2000 weld head.
Step 1: Gather Necessary Tools and Equipment
Before changing the electrode, it's important to have the necessary tools and equipment needed to complete the job. Here's what you'll need:
- A 1/16" Allen Wrench
- A new tungsten electrode
- Safety Glasses & Gloves
Step 2: Prepare the AMI 8-2000 Weld Head
After gathering all the necessary equipment, you need to prepare the weld head. Rotate the rotor until the old electrode is in the 12 o’clock position. Next, either turn off the power supply or disconnect the weld head from the power source. Make sure the also remove the collet assembly if needed.
Step 3: Remove the Old Electrode
The first part of removing the old electrode is finding the tungsten set screw. It's located on the face of the rotor where the tungsten is at. The heat from repeated welds may have caused the screw to seize. If this happens, apply a generous amount of pressure to loosen the screw while turning counter clockwise. You don't want to fully remove the screw from the rotor—just loosen it enough to get the tungsten out. Hold the electrode in place while removing it so it doesn't fall into the weld head assembly.
Step 4: Install the New Electrode
Once the old tungsten is removed from the rotor, insert the new electrode into the rotor assembly and tighten the bolt using the Allen wrench. Make sure that the electrode is fully inserted into the top of the rotor as this will prevent any issues during welding. It's also important here to verify the arc gap.
Step 5: Reassemble the AMI 8-2000 Weld Head
After ensuring the electrode has been installed correctly, you can reconnect the weld head to the power source and turn the power supply on. Use the return to home function on the power supply to auto-home the rotor and check that all the connections are secure and the weld head is functioning correctly.
Step 6: Test the Electrode
It's always important to do a test weld and check for any defects or issues. If there are any issues, repeat the steps above to confirm that there is proper installation.
By following these steps carefully, you can change the electrode of the AMI 8-2000 weld head safely and effectively. Changing out your tungsten frequently can help prevent specific faults and ensure more consistent and repeatable welds. If you have any questions or concerns, give us a call at 417-485-4575.
